Even on the first warm day of spring, the St.Michaels Crab & Steak House, so well- loved by locals,is really busy! Eric Rosen who has owned the business for 19 years had expected things to be slow this April day, "But we're slammed," he admits as he stands in the kitchen doorway in his long apron and apologizes for being to busy to talk right away.
Eric graduated from The Restaurant School of Philadelphia in 1981, first ran a restaurant in Chevy Chase and then Kentmoor Crabhouse on Kent Island for four years. He moved to Easton in 1983 and was chefin two restaurants before opening in this historic building, which was an oyster shucking house in the 1800's.
He works hard until November and then travels the world and opens again in spring, since the deck is one big draw! Its colorful umbrellas and enough breeze off the dock keep customers cool. They enjoy late lunches of crabs crab cakes or thick steaks and "the best Ceasar salads", topped with fresh crabmeat, steamed shrimp, seared tuna or succulent oysters.
"This is the closest thing to a 'Cheers' bar that you can get," agree several regulars with appreciation for bartenders Lesley and Diane, who use only fresh ingredients in bloody marys, fruit crushes and cosmopolitans.
"The difference between this restaurnat and others," Rosen remarks,"is that we are really family oriented. My kids work here and people come and ask for certain employees year after year." He wants his coustomers to feel part of the family also, as he celebrates his twentieth anniversary. He muses with a smile," I like it that everyone around here says,'We're going to Eric's!' I like it that at Eric's everyone is at home."
